Fear of Flying: Andrew Bird on KCRW

I was first tipped off about Andrew Bird a couple years ago, in the wake of the release of The Mysterious Production of Eggs. Although the album eventually found its way onto my iPod, I didn't really give it a concentrated listen. I suppose one reason is simply its understated style, at least judging from this live recording. Andrew's voice never rises above a restrained timbre, even at the punchiest moments, and it isn't nearly the catchiest thing out there. Still, the variety of esoteric instruments - Andrew is apparently proficient at violin, mandolin, glockenspiel and whistling - adds a comforting warmth to the sound, which is enhanced by the setting. I'm not quite as enraptured with him as, say, a Patrick Wolf or Beirut, but there's definitely some good stuff here.

This set was recorded on KCRW on April 6th, 2005. Andrew plays at Beacon Theatre on November 30th.
